Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer is often detected late due to its lack of early symptoms, earning it the reputation as a silent disease. It involves the abnormal growth of cells in the ovaries, with symptoms typically appearing only in advanced stages. Most ovarian cancers begin in the outer layer of the ovary called the epithelial ovarian cancer. Germ cell tumors are another type and stromal tumors originate

Diagnosis typically involves imaging techniques, starting with a screening ultrasound, followed by an MRI or CT scan. Blood tests measuring tumor markers, such as CA-125, are used to screen for ovarian cysts or masses and assess the risk of ovarian cancer.

The primary treatments are surgery and chemotherapy. For stage 3 or higher, chemotherapy is recommended before surgery to reduce the disease burden. If the disease burden is lower, surgery may be performed first.

At Zydus, advanced treatment options such as HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy), involves delivering chemotherapy directly into the abdominal cavity to target cancer cells, helping to delay cancer recurrence.

Common symptoms include:
  • Loss of appetite
  • Feeling full after small meals
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Abdominal discomfort or heaviness
  • Pelvic pain
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Vaginal bleeding after menopause
Risk factors include:
  • Family history of ovarian cancer
  • Obesity
  • Post-menopausal hormone replacement therapy
  • Endometriosis

Though there is no way to prevent ovarian cancer, discussing risk factors with the gynecologist may help you navigate this path better.

Why Zydus

Gynec cancer surgeries are fundamentally different from routine gynaecological surgeries. Our expert team of surgeons has over four decades of experience, treating cancers of the uterus, cervix, ovaries, vulva, and pelvis, making us one of the most trusted centres for women’s oncology care in Western India. Our team consists solely of female surgeons who work alongside dedicated female radiologists and other female medical staff to ensure clinical excellence and sensitivity.

We also offer fertility-preserving options, and every treatment plan is tailored specifically to our patients and their needs. The team also excels in Robotic Gynec surgeries, delivering successful outcomes.

We have Gujarat’s first dedicated department that specialises in peritoneal surface oncology (HIPEC and PIPAC). Peritoneal cancers develop within the abdominal cavity lining the stomach and other organs with ovarian cancer being one of the most common type to spread to the abdomen. These cancers are usually diagnosed at later stages (IV). HIPEC, or Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, is a procedure performed in conjunction with cytoreductive surgery (CRS) to remove cancerous tumours. In the hands of a skilled surgeon, like our team, the risks associated with CRS are minimal. PIPAC, or Pressurised intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy, is usually performed in advanced stages of cancer and can help increase patients' life expectancy and has negligible side-effects when performed by experts.

Our team’s clinical expertise also involves colposcopy, LEEP (loop electrosurgical excision procedure), LLETZ (large loop excision of the transformation zone), managing recurrent ovarian cancer, robotic surgeries like Robotic Hysterectomy, Robotic Wertheim’s hysterectomy, Robotic Lymph node dissection, Sentinel lymph node dissection for uterine cancer and grade 4 endometriosis, to name a few.
