Breast Cancer

Breast cancer affects 1 in 28 women in India, with nearly 170,000+ cases are diagnosed yearly, equating to one case every 4 minutes. Tragically, a life is lost to this disease every 13 minutes. The incidence of breast cancer is rising rapidly, but early detection can help manage it effectively. Unfortunately, by the time most women seek specialist care, the tumor is usually at an advanced stage.

Breast cancer cells originate in the milk-producing lobules and are not life-threatening in early stages. However, when these cells invade nearby breast tissue, they form tumors which feels like lumps. Identifying changes in the initial stages increases the chance of recovery.

Recognizing the Symptoms
  • A painless lump in the breast or underarm, causing no/minimal discomfort
  • Changes in the breast skin texture
  • Irritation or dimpling of the breast skin
  • Recent changes in breast size or shape
  • Thickening or partial swelling of the breast
  • Red-colored nipple discharge
  • Pain in the nipple area
  • Redness of the skin around the nipple or breast

Diagnosis can be achieved through simple mammography and, if needed, a needle biopsy. Thus, regular self-examination is crucial, and annual mammography is recommended for women over 40. Interestingly, 0.5-1% breast cancers occur in men.

Risk Factors:
  • Obesity
  • Excess alcohol consumption
  • Family history of breast cancer
  • Postmenopausal hormone therapy
  • Tobacco use

Of the patients in whom breast cancers develop, most have no identifiable breast cancer risk factor other than gender (female) and age (over 40 years). Family history is also a strong predisposition, with the most dominant mutations in BRCA1, BRCA2 and PALB-2 genes. Women with these mutations may consider limiting risk factors or chemoprevention. Being one of the best cancer hospitals in Ahmedabad, we offer one of the most advanced and comprehensive services.

Though treatment depends on the type and the extent of spread to the neighbouring areas, combination of treatments can minimize the chances of recurrence.

Treatment options
  • Surgery
  • Radiation therapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Immunotherapy
  • Targeted therapy
Fibroadenoma

Fibroadenoma is a common breast lump, typically seen in women aged 15 to 35. Known as a "breast mouse," it is a painless, mobile lump. Consulting a gynecologist or breast surgeon is advised, where a quick, scarless, and painless 15-minute needle biopsy can confirm the diagnosis.

If the lump is hard, painful, or larger than 3 cm, surgical removal is often recommended. Women with a family history of breast cancer should also consult a breast cancer specialist.
