Bone Marrow Transplant

Haematology, the science of blood and its disorders, including bone marrow, is fundamental to our diagnostic and treatment programs. We address:

  • Benign Haematological Conditions: Anaemia, bleeding disorders, platelet disorders, and haemoglobinopathies
  • Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes: Including aplastic anaemia
  • Haematological Malignancies: Leukemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma, myeloproliferative and lymphoproliferative disorders
  • Chemotherapy Services: Provided for inpatients and outpatients
  • Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT): Procedure A bone marrow transplant, also referred to as a blood or cell transplant, involves replacing diseased marrow with healthy hematopoietic stem cells. These can be autologous (from the patient) or allogeneic (from a donor) and are used to treat blood cancers and other conditions like genetic disorders such as thalassemia.
Transplant Types
  • Autologous Stem Cell Transplant: Uses the patient’s own stem cells, minimizing risks.
  • Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplant: Utilizes stem cells from matched related/unrelated, syngeneic, or haploidentical donors for conditions like leukemias, aplastic anaemia, thalassemia, AML, and ALL.
  • Haploidentical (Half-Matched) Stem Cell Transplant: Performed with partially matched donors.

These procedures involve harvesting stem cells from bone marrow or peripheral blood under strict sterile conditions.

Blood cancer

Blood cancer is a group of cancers that affect the production and function of blood cells. It usually begins in the bone marrow, where abnormal and dysfunctional blood cells grow and multiply uncontrollably. These cells interfere with the body’s ability to fight infections, carry oxygen, and repair tissues effectively.

The main types of blood cancer include leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. Leukemia affects white blood cells and can develop rapidly or progress slowly. Lymphoma originates in the lymphatic system, which is an important part of the body’s immune defense. Myeloma develops in plasma cells, a type of white blood cell responsible for producing antibodies. Together, these cancers disrupt normal blood cell production and weaken the body’s natural defense mechanisms.

Common symptoms of blood cancer include persistent fatigue, unexplained fever, drenching night sweats, and a tendency to bruise or bleed easily. Some individuals may also notice swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, or groin.

Other warning signs can include bone or joint pain, frequent infections, and unexplained weight loss. These symptoms often develop gradually and may seem mild at first, but if they persist or worsen, it is important to seek medical evaluation for timely diagnosis and care.

Symptoms by Type

Leukemia: Common symptoms include persistent fatigue, frequent infections, easy bruising or bleeding, and unexplained weight loss.

Lymphoma: Often presents with painless swelling of lymph nodes, usually in the neck, armpits, or groin, along with fever and drenching night sweats.

Myeloma: Typically causes bone pain—most commonly in the back or ribs—along with fatigue and a higher risk of infections.

One needs to understand that all blood cancers are not the same, there are some which can be treated very successfully while there are others in which the treatment may not be that effective. Due to advances in the field of medical science and the availability of new and effective cancer treatment in form of immunotherapy, targeted agents and biologic agents we are able to treat blood cancer patients with better success rate.
